Robert Kross, writing at Forbes.com, has a piece on some exciting American green energy companies.
Here are some examples:Micromidas, based in West Sacramento, Calif., converts carbon in organic wastewater to degradable and recyclable bioplastic that replaces harmful petrochemical-based plastics. The company was started by a group of college students who won grant money for their big thinking. Pi Mobility in Sausalito, Calif., developed a pioneering electric bicycle that uses green/clean technology in manufacturing.
The bikes are 20 to 30 times more efficient than conventional motorcycles and cars. Pi Mobility is making something–and it has been profitable while maintaining production in the U.S. Dynamic Structures Ltd. in Vancouver, Canada, is on a wild ride. It’s the premier provider of the world’s largest telescopes as well as builder of bridges and designer, fabricator of major amusement rides for theme parks around the world.

Nice piece. I think part of the problem in the United States is that too many talented young people want to pursue careers that they think will give them internal satisfaction – things like teaching, non-profit work etc.
We need to make young people understand that this country was built on innovation by engineers – and that there is something immensely gratifying about providing jobs for people.
